A cold front is positioned from Chicago southwest to Texas and spreading everything from snow showers to the upper Midwest to severe weather in the southern United States. Here in Kentucky, it’s been a cloudy and windy day with peak wind gusts over 30 mph so far and highs in the mid to upper 60s. The high temperatures in Lexington broke the record high temperature set in 2018 of 65 degrees. The new record high is now 67 degrees.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Tonight, expect mostly cloudy skies with scattered showers possible and mild conditions as temperatures move into the mid 50s
Saturday, expect strong to severe thunderstorms across the Bluegrass as a cold front moves through the Ohio Valley. Winds will be sustained 20-30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph during the day with stronger winds during thunderstorm activity. A marginal risk for severe weather has been issued by the Storm Prediction Center.
Temperatures will continue on a warming trend as we move to the weekend with more record breaking heat Saturday. Saturday’s record high is 66 degrees set in 2018. Temperatures may be warm but expect a strong storm system as well.
Showers and thunderstorms as low pressure center will be a bit of a reality check for many people across the Midwest when it comes to winter for us in Kentucky we will stick with only rain, but a lot of it with the majority of the rain staying in western Kentucky, still central and eastern Kentucky could see between 1-2 inches so localized flooding could be possible.
The rain will be something to monitor but as of now the main threat will be the strong winds associated with this system. We could see gusts up to 60 mph when the storms are at its strongest. Gusts that strong can break weak branches or trees especially under soggy roots from soaking rain.
