LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Tensions between The United States and Iran are continuing to rise following the U.S.’s assassination of the country’s top general, Qassim Sulemani.

The decision was met with backlash and talks of war with Iran across the country, including Lexington.

The Lexington Democratic Socialists of America rallied in protest of a potential war Sunday afternoon at the Fayette County Courthouse.

Laura Simmons says she organized the rally out of concern for the future of the nation.

She says the president’s decision was not only irresponsible, but also dangerous.

“We have no business engaging in that area in the first place. It’s not our war to fight,” she said.

Simmons says there could be more loss of life on both sides if tensions between the U.S. and Iran continue to rise.

“Our military could die in this war that we don’t need to be fighting in. Military families will be affected and a lot of families and innocent people in Iran will be affected.”

Simmons says she is waiting to see how the situation between the two nations progresses before planning future events.
