Mexicans are reacting with anger to President Donald Trump’s pledge to designate Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations.

Mexican officials and experts don’t fear that Trump will send killer drones into Mexico.

But they say the move could damage Mexico-US relations. In the 1990s, annual U.S. certifications of Mexico’s anti-drug efforts poisoned ties because the possibility of sanctions and aid cutoffs constantly loomed over Mexico.

On a more visceral level, Mexicans reacted angrily to the potential terrorism designation Wednesday, arguing it would violate the country’s sovereignty.

The fact the designation was suggested by a community of dual U.S.-Mexican nationals who live in northern Mexico didn’t help. Some accused the group of treason.
