RICHMOND, Ky. (WTVQ) – Kentucky State Police say two Madison County Sheriff’s deputies went to the hospital with minor injuries Friday after a car crash during a traffic stop that brought traffic to a standstill on I-75.

Investigators say the two deputies pulled over a vehicle on the shoulder of northbound I-75 at mile marker 88, which is between the two Richmond Exits, around 11:00 a.m.

KSP says during the traffic stop, an SUV driven by 34-year old Jimmy Hoskins, of Pineville, swerved onto the shoulder and hit the deputies’ cruiser and another vehicle, which in turn hit the deputies, sending one of them over the guardrail.

Investigators say the deputies were treated and released from Baptist Health in Richmond.

KSP says all five people in the SUV were taken to UK Hospital in Lexington with non-life threatening injuries.

State Police say Hoskins was cited for Failure to Give Right of Way to Emergency Vehicle, Failure to Maintain Required Insurance and several other traffic-related offenses.

The accident snarled traffic, which led to a miles-long backup.  All lanes reopened after 2:00 p.m.
