FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – Tens of thousands of Kentucky voters could go to the polls in November only to find out they can’t vote because they are on an “inactive voters” list.
The Kentucky Democratic Party is demanding the State Board of Election reactivate those voters.
The board had a meeting on Tuesday morning and board members took no action.
Secretary of State Alison Grimes says there’s about 175,000 names on the list and she describes the list as unlawful.
She says most people who are on the list don’t even know they’re on it.
If you haven’t voted in the last two federal elections you are placed on the list.
Grimes says she researched the list and learned there are people on it who have voted recently.
“These are not people who’s registration should be questioned. These are not people who should be walking down a path towards deactivating their registration. We need voters to be vigilant and check their voter registration,” said Alison Grimes, Secretary of State.
The Kentucky Democratic Party has threatened to take legal action if the voters are not reactivated and Grimes says she’s ready to do the same.
We reached out to the State Board of Elections for a comment but there has been no response.
