Report: City of Richmond offers armory to ease jail overcrowding

MADISON COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ)- The city of Richmond is making an offer to help ease chronic overcrowding at the Madison County Detention Center.

According to the Richmond Register, the city of Richmond is offering to lease the empty armory building on Second Street to the county for just $1 a year. The 80-year-old building is 7,574 square feet.

The county says the facility would require a lot of renovations to bring it up to code and meet the standards of the Department of Corrections.

It’s one of the options the county says it is considering.

Last week, the county approved the first reading of an ordinance which would increase the county’s property tax to help finance a new $45 million jail facility.
