Dozens of artists to ‘Paint the Town’ Saturday in Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – This weekend dozens of artists will ‘Paint the Town’, literally. Arts Connect is hosting the 8th annual event in downtown Lexington on Saturday where artists choose a designated area to setup and paint outdoors.

Kate Savage, the president of Arts Connect, founded the non-profit three years ago.

Savage says the arts community in Lexington is, “Very vibrant, very vital and I think people aren’t necessarily aware of that.”

Savage hopes this event will draw more attention to the arts community. She says at least 60 artists are signed up to participate.

Artists will have six hours to create their masterpiece Saturday in a plein air style, which Savage says is French for ‘painting outside’.

“Artists like VanGogh, Renoir, Baptiste all painted outside. And you have to work with the light,” explained Savage.

Lexington artist Julie Quick is taking part for the fourth time.

“I think I’ll start with the Farmer’s Market as long as I can find a quiet place to park and paint. And then, I might move up to Short Street and paint a few homes,” said Quick.

Painting begins at 8 a.m. and artists must turn in their finished product at 2 p.m. All work will be for sale and exhibited in the Pam Miller Downtown Arts Center for six weeks. However, those who want to attend an Opening Reception at the arts center on Saturday from 6:30-9 p.m. will get first dibs if they’d like to purchase any artwork.

The reception will include live music, food and drinks. The public will also be able to vote on their favorite work of art. Tickets are $25 and available at the door or online HERE.

Artists who are interested in participating can still signup by showing up at the Pam Miller Downtown Arts Center by 8 a.m. Saturday or by registering online HERE.
