HAZARD, Ky. (WTVQ) – Kentucky State Police say a confrontation between a man and officers led to his death Monday night in Perry County.
Troopers with Kentucky State Police and Perry County Sheriff’s deputies were serving a search warrant at a home on Hull School Road in the Bonnyman community when they say they saw five people outside another home engaged in suspected drug activity.
The five ran into the home and officers say that’s when a loud sound, believed to be a gunshot, was heard.
After a brief negotiation, police say three of the five came out.
Police say there was no communication with the two inside but, after an extended period of time, they ran outside and were confronted by troopers and a deputy.
One of them was armed with a gun and was told to drop the weapon, according to police.
When he refused, police say gunfire was exchanged and the man was fatally shot.
A trooper was also hit.
Police say the trooper was taken to the Hazard Appalachian Regional Medical Treatment Center, where he was treated and released Tuesday morning.
Police have not released the identity of the man who was killed or the trooper who was injured.
