PRESTONSBURG, Ky. (WTVQ) – A severe storm that blew through Floyd County Wednesday left one man dead in a freak weather-related accident in downtown Prestonsburg.
According to the Floyd County Coroner’s Office, strong winds blew a roof off the Hock Shop building on Court Street in Prestonsburg around 2:28 p.m.
The coroner says the roof landed on a passing vehicle with a man and woman inside.
The coroner says the man, who was driving, was killed. The female passenger was not hurt, according to investigators.
The name of the victim wasn’t immediately released.
The National Weather Service says the damage was caused by downburst winds.
Other vehicles were damaged by falling storm debris, but they were unoccupied, according to the mayor.
Downed trees and power lines in the area left hundreds of people without electricity. Crews were working to restore power and clear roads littered with storm debris.
