LONDON, Ky. (AP) – Republican challenger Robert Goforth says Kentucky’s governor should stop hiding behind national political figures, including President Donald Trump, to try to boost his reelection campaign.

Goforth is a state representative from East Bernstadt. He’s among three Republicans challenging Gov. Matt Bevin in the May 21 primary election.

Goforth said Tuesday that Bevin should “quit trying to hide behind President Trump” and the Republican Governors Association.

Bevin plays up his ties to Trump, including in his campaign’s first TV ad. His campaign didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

Goforth also called on Bevin to participate in a debate before the primary.

Goforth is waging an aggressive campaign against Bevin. Goforth has run a series of TV ads and has attacked Bevin’s performance as governor.

The other Republicans in the race are William Woods and Ike Lawrence.
