EL PASO, Texas (AP) – It’s not easy to drown out President Donald Trump, but Beto O’Rourke showed he’s willing to try.

The possible 2020 Democratic presidential hopeful staged a hometown rally near where Trump was speaking in the U.S.-Mexico border city of El Paso, Texas, on Monday – so close, in fact, that echoes of the president’s words could be heard during lulls.

It was the latest signal that the ex-Texas congressman is readying for a White House run. It’s also a window into what an O’Rourke campaign might look like.

O’Rourke barely mentioned Trump but assailed the president’s support for border walls, trying to stay both critical and optimistic in a way that helped him pull off a near upset of Republican Sen. Ted Cruz in November.
