EKU issues alert after man reports sexual assault

RICHMOND, Ky. (WTVQ)- EKU has students on alert after a man was reportedly assaulted on campus.

Campus police say a man unaffiliated with EKU reported being sexually assaulted by a stranger around 2:15 pm Sunday.

According to the alert, it happened in a wooded area behind Baptist Health Medical Center.

Police say the victim told them the suspect followed him from around the Arby’s on Eastern Bypass.

According to police, he’s 40-45 years old, taller than six feet, about 240-275 pounds with a black goatee and black bushy hair shorter than shoulder length.



He was wearing blue jeans with a white shirt that had “Berea swim” written on it and white shoes that had green markings on them.

Dear University Community:

 

At 2:13PM on February 3, 2019, a non-EKU affiliated male reported being sexually assaulted by another person unknown to him.  This occurred on EKU property approximately 200-300 feet behind  the Baptist Health Medical Center in a wooded area.  The suspect is described as being a white male, 40-45 years of age, over six feet tall, 240-275 pounds, black goatee, black bushy hair shorter than shoulder length, and was wearing blue jeans, white shirt with “Berea Swim” written on the shirt, and white shoes with green markings.

 

The victim reported being followed on foot from the area around Arby’s on the Eastern Bypass to the wooded area behind the hospital.  This incident is being investigated by the EKU Police Department.

  • At night, stick to well-lighted areas whenever possible and avoid alleyways or “short cuts” through isolated areas.

  • Know where the emergency call boxes are located on campus and learn how to use them.
  • If you are being followed, change direction and go to the nearest business or home; knock on the door, and request that someone call the Police. Note the description of the person following you.
  • Walk near the curb and avoid shrubbery or other places of potential concealment.
  • Tell a friend or roommate where you are going and what time you expect to return.
  • Stay alert to your surroundings and the people around you.
  • Carry your purse close to your body and keep a firm grip on it; carry your wallet in an inside coat pocket or your front pant pocket.
  • Keep your keys separate from your purse or backpack.
  • Don’t overload yourself with bags or packages and avoid wearing shoes that restrict your movements.
  • Walk with a confident stride; keep your head up and look around.
  • If a motorist stops and asks for directions, keep your distance from the car.
