LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- Kentucky football player Zy’Aire Hughes was arrested this weekend, just hours before Kentucky learned its bowl game fate.
Lexington police say #13 Zy’Aire Hughes, 21, was arrested around 4 a.m. Sunday in Lexington on Woodland Avenue.
He’s facing an assault fourth-degree minor injuries charge.
Police say it’s a misdemeanor arrest, but there isn’t much other information right now.
An arrest citation hasn’t been filed yet in court.
Hughes is a sophomore wide receiver who hails from Paducah.
He has played in 14 games, seven this season.
In one of those, against Murray State, he went 49 yards for a touchdown.
“We just needed an explosive play to happen and I guess that’s what that was and it helped the team out,” Zy’Aire Hughes told sports reporters then.
Coach Mark Stoops has released a statement about the arrest.
“We’re aware of the situation,” Coach Stoops wrote. “We’re in the process of gathering information. Proper behavior is an expectation of our program and we will address this as the facts are determined”.
