WASHINGTON, D.C. (WTVQ)- Kentucky’s leaders in Washington, D.C. are among those across the world reflecting this weekend on President George H.W. Bush’s life.
“Elaine and I join the Senate and the nation in grieving the loss of President George H. W. Bush. This devoted father and decorated patriot spent decades serving his country, from the skies above the south Pacific to our nation’s highest office. He kept America safe as CIA Director. He represented us with skill as Ambassador to the United Nations, envoy to China, and Vice President. And as our forty-first president, George Bush brought clear-eyed, principled leadership to a nation and world in transition. America led an international coalition that fought and won the Gulf War. Freedom triumphed over the Soviet Union. The global economy began to transform. And through it all, Americans could rest assured that the public servant they’d placed in the White House was equipped to meet these challenges. George Bush built his life on the premise that loving and serving America was simply a citizen’s duty. He fulfilled that duty time and time again, as completely as anyone could. His legacy will rank among the most distinguished statesmen our nation has ever produced. George Bush was blessed with many gifts. First among them were his beloved Barbara and the family they built together. Today, we accompany the entire Bush family in mourning and prayer. But we also join them in gratitude that God gave this country George and Barbara Bush.” -Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell
“Today, I join my fellow Americans and a grateful nation to mourn the passing of our nation’s 41st President, George H.W. Bush, an American patriot who will be forever remembered for his decency, strength of character, and love of country. A quick witted man of boundless optimism and self-deprecating humor, President Bush dedicated his entire life to the service of the nation. He understood the importance of American leadership in the world and reminded us how ‘a thousand points of light’ – the institutions of private society – can make a profound difference in the lives of our fellow man. President Bush inspired us to seize the blessings of liberty and serve others to make the world a better place. Carol and I offer our thoughts and prayers to the entire Bush family during this time.”- Congressman Andy Barr
“President George H.W. Bush was one of America’s most beloved leaders and the epitome of public service. He was a personal friend and a political mentor, never neglecting time to enjoy life and helping others do the same.
“He was an American hero and a brilliant strategist who courageously defended our country and the conservative values we hold so dear. My wife, Cynthia, and I join the Nation in mourning the loss of President George H.W. Bush, as we celebrate his accomplished life and the legacy he leaves behind.”- Congressman Hal Rogers
“I am deeply saddened by the death of President George H. W. Bush. President Bush dedicated his life to our country, starting with his valiant service in the Navy during World War II. We could always count on his kindness and his grace. As we mourn his passing, I’m reminded of a quote from his inaugural address: ‘I do not mistrust the future; I do not fear what is ahead. For our problems are large, but our heart is larger.’ In an age of divided politics, we should remember his example. Please join me in praying for the Bush family during this difficult time.”- Congressman Brett Guthrie
Governor Matt Bevin has also ordered all flags lowered to half staff until sunset on December 30th to honor Bush.
