MARTIN COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ)- Martin County is known nationwide for having problems with clean water and for several years now.
Because of this struggling water system, water bills are higher than many in the county say they would like.
Authorities say this isn’t reason enough to steal water from the meters.
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office arrested 41-year-old Michael Maynard Tuesday, after water officials had been monitoring him saying he hadn’t paid a water bill since June.
They say he had been using a cheater bar for months to steal water from the county.
BarbiAnn Maynard, no relation to the suspect, says it’s not fair to be paying so much money for dirty water.
Sheriff John Kirk says he hopes this arrest will keep others from trying to steal water.
Michael Maynard is at Big Sandy Regional Detention Center and faces charges for theft of service.
