FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – A Franklin County school will be closed on Thursday after a rabid bat was found nearby.
Franklin County Schools posted on its Facebook page that Hearn Elementary School will be closed on August 30 so officials can conduct an inspection to ensure there are no bats in the school building.
According to the post, a single bat was found in the neighborhood of the school earlier this week and, after being tested by the Franklin County Health Department, was determined to be rabid.
The district says the Franklin County Schools superintendent made the decision to close the school “as a safety precaution” and that the district is working closely with the Franklin County Health Department “to ensure that the building and surrounding area are safe for students and staff.”
The district says the school is expected to be reopened on Friday and that Hearn parents will be notified through Facebook, Twitter and telephone (via OneCall).
