MOREHEAD, Ky. (WTVQ) – It was a heartbreaking start to Thamasi Farmakis’ college experience. His childhood friend Raymond Jones was killed in a car crash. He was only 18 years old.

“Finding out was like getting punched in the face,” said Farmakis.

The freshman is going through rush. He approached some members of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity to see if there’s a way to raise money for funeral expenses. President Tyler Morgan and the rest of his Pi Kappa Phi brothers began raising money through a GoFundMe page. Morgan says no one in the chapter knew Jones.

“We just wanted to make sure that our community is taken care of and that people around us are going to have the support that they need in even the darkest times or the happiest of times,” said Morgan.

The reaction left Farmakis in shock.

“It blew my mind. Never in a million years did I expect this kind of turnout. They were just so willing and ready,” said Farmakis.
