CAMPBELL CO., Tn (WTVQ) – A former basketball player at Henry Clay High School and Asbury University drowned Monday while swimming in a Tennessee lake.
According to the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office, Jordan T. Houston drowned around 1:30 Monday afternoon in the Cedar Creek area of Norris Lake.
Lieutenant John Long with the county’s sheriff’s office says that is a popular area of the lake for boating and swimming.
Long says Houston was there with his girlfriend and her family, swimming at the back of the boat when he went under water and did not come back up.
According to Lt. Long, there were about 30 witnesses on scene.
Rescuers were able to recover Houston’s body within an hour, according to the sheriff’s office. Houston’s body has been taken to Knoxville for an autopsy, something Long says is standard procedure for Tennessee drowning victims.
Lt. Long says foul play is not expected.
Houston is a 2016 graduate at Henry Clay, where he played on the boy’s basketball team.
After graduating high school, Houston attended Asbury University, where he played on the basketball team for one season.
His former college coach, Will Shouse, said on Twitter Monday night that he’s “praying for the family of former @AsburyHoops player @Jhouston32. So very sad.”
The University’s President, Dr. Sandra Gray released a statement saying, “Our hearts are deeply saddened as we grieve with Jordan’s family and friends, and we pray that the love and peace of Jesus will surround them during this time.”
