LAUREL COUNTY — The jury has come to a verdict for a London couple charged in the 2016 death of their 7-week-old infant.
The Corbin Times-Tribune reports that the father, Gary Nicely, is guilty of second-degree manslaughter and third-degree criminal abuse. The mother, Jessica Nicely, has been acquitted of all charges.
Investigators say Gary Nicely was arrested in August 2016 after a complaint was made to law enforcement officials by medical staff at KentuckyOne Health St. Joseph London concerning the suspected abuse of a 7-week-old infant.
During an investigation by the Laurel County Sheriff’s Department, detectives learned that Gary Nicely had reportedly been caring for the baby at his home when the injuries were sustained. The baby’s mother, Jessica Nicely, had left to take a 7-year-old child to school and, upon returning to the home, found the baby unresponsive.
The baby was transported from St. Joseph to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, where it died from its injuries. The baby’s twin was also transported to the UK Medical Center, where it was found to have injuries as well.
