HAZARD, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Perry County Coroner’s Office says a skull found in the woods a year ago has finally been identified.
The coroner says the skull belongs to Maudie Smith, who disappeared in February of 2017.
Shortly after that, in April 2017, the coroner’s office says it was notified a human skull found.
It took experts at the University of Tennessee and Texas a year to positively identify the skull as Smith’s.
The coroner says they don’t have a cause of death, but he says the remains do not show any sign of trauma.
Smith’s death is still under investigation.
