Today is the 44th anniversary of the second largest tornado outbreak in the US.
According to the National Weather Service, in 1974, 148 tornadoes ripped through the Midwest, hitting several spots in the Bluegrass.
The tornadoes killed 71 Kentuckians and took a total of 315 lives.
Lexington Emergency Management has advice for dealing with severe storms and high winds.
Before the storm, bring your trash cans inside. If you can’t, make sure they are secure.
Don’t forget your lawn furniture. Any outside items can be tossed around in the wind and cause more damage than the storm itself.
Make sure you have flashlights and extra batteries in case of a power outage.
Give your utility company a call and report your outage. . To keep your food cold, try not to open your refrigerator unless necessary.
Lexington Emergency Management says the biggest thing is to stay inside during a storm.
