LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- Tuesday was day three of the Ronald Exantus trial.
Exantus is accused of murdering six-year-old Logan Tipton, as he slept in his Versailles home back in 2015.
Tuesday was the first day for the defense to argue its case.
For the first time jurors heard the other side of this story, what was happening in Ronald Exantus’ life in the days leading up to the murder, from those who were closest to him including his now ex-girlfriend who he lived with at the time.
Lauren Burgess, Ronald Exantus’ girlfriend of more than two years at the time of the murder, took the stand Tuesday explaining what she called Exantus’ strange behavior the week before Logan Tipton’s murder.
“Towards the end of the week he wasn’t eating anymore. He became really emotional,” said Burgess.
Burgess says on that Sunday, just hours before Exantus drove to Versailles, he broke down while they were at church.
“He was kind of blurting out stuff that didn’t make sense. He was apologizing to my mother. He kind of dropped to the floor and he proposed to me out of the blue. He was sobbing and crying,” said Burgess.
But that proposal, Burgess says, didn’t last long.
“We were laying on the bed. Ron just got up and he just kept saying I don’t want to be with you, I don’t want to marry you. I’m not going to hurt you. I have to go,” said Burgess.
And go he did.
Burgess says it wasn’t until police knocked on her door the next morning that she learned what had happened.
“They said they only came there because Ron said he had killed me,” said Burgess.
The defense is arguing Exantus is not guilty by reason of insanity but the prosecution is arguing he’s not insane, he was under the influence of synthetic drugs at the time of the murder.
The trail is set to reconvene at 9 a.m. Wednesday.
