BEREA, Ky. (WTVQ) – Illnesses have hit schools in Berea hard.
Berea Community Schools announced Wednesday that the middle school and high school will be closed Thursday and Friday because of a large number of absences due to illnesses.
Superintendent Diane Hatchett tells the Richmond Register newspaper that attendance at the middle school Wednesday was at 87 percent, with more than 140 student out ill.
She says the high school was at 79 percent.
Hatchett tells the newspaper that students, faculty and staff were falling ill with the flu, strep throat and a stomach virus.
The district says it wants to prevent further exposure and allow healing time for those that are ill.
A custodial staff will spend Thursday and Friday cleaning the schools.
