LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- After interviewing a variety of officials from different government agencies today, the consensus is that the average person will not feel too much of an impact from this potential shutdown, at least in the short term.
If there is a government shutdown Friday night, you’ll still get your mail Saturday, you’ll still be able to catch a flight out of town and you’ll still get your social security checks.
But if you need anything non-essential from the government, it’s most likely going to have to wait.
That includes applying for a passport or getting a gun permit.
But unlike the last government shutdown in 2013, the federal government says national parks will remain open no matter what, so if you were planning on visiting Mammoth Cave or Cumberland Gap, you’re safe.
A few other things, the VA Hospital in Lexington will stay open no matter what because it is deemed essential by the government but programs within the CDC including their flu program would shut down, something many are concerned with given the strong flu season we are currently in the middle of.
