FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – Emergency bridge repairs are forcing the closure of a portion of Interstate 64 in Franklin County.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says the exit ramp from I-64 East to US 127 North will be closed to repair the US 127 bridge over I-64.
The cabinet says concrete deterioration and settlement have resulted in uneven pavement across the south end of the structure.
Work is scheduled to begin later this week to stabilize the concrete approach slabs at the south end of the US 127 bridge. The I-64 East ramp to Exit 53B is scheduled for closure beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday, January 5. This exit will be closed for approximately five days.
Drivers going to Frankfort should use Exit 48 and follow KY 151 North to US 60 East. Another alternate is utilizing Exit 58 and following US 60 West into Frankfort.
Lane closures will also be necessary on US 127 during these repairs. Crews will start in the northbound direction of US 127 this week (mile marker 4.4).
Engineers are designing permanent repairs to the US 127 bridge over I-64 which will include removal of the concrete slabs, replacement of some failing drainage structures and paving of the approaches with asphalt. This work will be performed later in 2018 after designs are completed and the weather is more conducive for asphalt paving.
