LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Lexington Humane Society is opening its doors again after voluntarily shutting down for almost two weeks.
The Lexington Humane Society temporarily closed after the discovery of Streptococcus zooepidemicus or “Strep Zoo.”
It is a contagious bacterial infection spread through airborne exposure, contact with bodily fluids and contaminated surfaces.
Four dogs died at a shelter as a result of the infection.
The shelter was originally scheduled to reopen Monday but officials say, after talking to national experts Thursday, they will resume adoptions Saturday.
