Atty general: Lawmaker accused of assault should be expelled

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) – Kentucky’s Democratic attorney general says the state House of Representatives should take steps to expel a Republican lawmaker accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl in 2013.

The Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting reported this week a woman had accused Dan Johnson of assaulting her in 2013 when she was 17. Police investigated but closed the case without filing charges.

Johnson called the accusations totally false.

Attorney General Andy Beshear said Johnson is not qualified to be a legislator. He cited the assault allegations, plus some of Johnson’s previous Facebook posts comparing Barack and Michelle Obama to monkeys.

Beshear did not call for the resignation of four Republican lawmakers who secretly settled a sexual harassment claim. He said they should divulge everything that happened, which might require them to resign.
