RICHMOND, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Madison County coroner identified a man wanted in connection to a double-murder in Detroit who killed himself after a brief standoff with police in Richmond Monday afternoon.
The coroner says 34-year-old Calvin Chappel, of Detroit, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Authorities in Michigan contacted law enforcement in Richmond after receiving information that Chappel was believed to be in a Super 8 Hotel on North Keeneland Drive.
A search led investigators to a vehicle in the hotel’s parking lot around 2:00 p.m.
After verifying it was the suspect’s vehicle, investigators say they learned Chappel was in a room on the second floor.
As a precaution, guests on the floor were evacuated followed by a heavy law enforcement presence outside the hotel and room.
State Police and Richmond Police contacted Chappel in a room at which time investigators say they heard a single gunshot.
When law enforcement officers entered the room, they say they found Chappel dead.
Media reports out of Detroit say Chappel was a corrections officer at a facility in Michigan.
