LONDON, Ky. (WTVQ) – One woman is in the hospital after a two-vehicle DUI involved crash, according to the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the Sheriff, the crash happened just before 7 a.m. Thursday on Rocky Branch Road, approximately four miles south of London.
The Sheriff’s office says apparently a red Chevrolet car was traveling eastbound on Rocky Branch Road when it supposedly passed an eastbound van in a curve, losing control, hitting the front end of the van, and flipping into a ditch.
The driver of the car, 48-year-old Melissa Sams, was transported to a local hospital before being flown to UK Hospital in Lexington for treatment of her injuries, according to the Sheriff.
During the investigation, the Sheriff says deputies determined Sams was under the influence.
According to the Sheriff, they found drug paraphernalia and drugs including a baggie reportedly containing methamphetamine and Xanax that the driver told deputies she had taken the day before. They say Sams also said she had taken morphine the day before.
Sams was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence, 4th degree assault, possession of drug paraphernalia, and three counts of possession of a controlled substance, says the Sheriff.
The Sheriff’s office says Sams was cited to Laurel District Court since she had to be airlifted to UK for treatment.
