LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Monday is the anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks and this weekend, the people who died in the tragedy are on people’s minds.
That’s why the Lexington Fire Department climbed the big blue building downtown Saturday morning.
The firefighters put on their gear and climbed 110 flights of stairs in honor of the 343 firefighters that lost their lives while on duty in the twin towers.
They wore name tags representing each of the fallen. When they completed their challenge, they rang the bell and called out the names of those they were honoring.
“I can’t imagine what was going through their minds that day. we’re climbing in perfect conditions they had even more gear, hoses, hand tools, which add another 60 pounds, knowing that they were going to fight fire.”
The firefighters say they make this same climb every year to honor the fallen.
