LAWRENCEBURG, Ky.(WTVQ) – Since 1987, people have been driving through six states, along Highway 127, for the annual, 700-mile-long, yard sale. Part of the route runs right through Kentucky, and businesses that have their homes off the highway, are thankful.
Judie Kays and her family own Family Affair, a home-style restaurant that sits just feet from Highway 127. Family Affair was established in 1991, and Kays says they have always thrived from the business the sale brings.
Kays says she enjoys the yard sale, but does not get to shop it very often, as she says the week of the sale is the busiest they have all year.
Other businesses, like Marshall’s Spirit Shop, also see a positive impact from the event. Store owner Gary Estes says the yard sales bring in over 100 more customers per day than normal.
Estes says the timing of the event is perfect because it falls between big holidays, bringing in more business at a time when they do not get much.
The 127 yard sale draws people in from all over the United States. Because of that, business owners say the most exciting part of the yard sale for them is never knowing who will walk through their doors.
“Some of Rachel Ray’s people were here and we had and article in [her magazine] that told about the 127, so you never know who’s going to be in here,” said Kays.
The 127 yard sale continues until the evening of Sunday, August 6.
