Elizabethtown, Ky. – Health officials in Nelson and Hardin Counties are warning about a recent outbreak of Shigella.
According to the News-Enterprise, The Lincoln Trail District Health Department issued the alert on Friday. The department says they are dealing with about 50 confirmed cases.
Shigella is a bacteria or germ that infects the bowels.
To help prevent the disease from spreading the health department advises frequent hand washing with soap and water, particularly after a bathroom visit. Children with diarrhea should be kept at home and not participate in group activities, including church or community events and sports activities, particularly swimming.
