Pioneer Playhouse – Death by Darkness
Pioneer Playhouse located in Danville is Kentucky’s Oldest Outdoor Theatre. It was founded in 1950 by Eben C. Henson, and continues to be run by the Henson family. The historic theatre opens on June 9 with a “Kentucky Voices” original play, back by popular demand: Death by Darkness, a mystery set in Mammoth Cave in 1842.
Death by Darkness was written by Danville native, Elizabeth Orndorff. The play took Best Play and Best Playwright Awards at the International Mystery Writers Festival in 2007. It also won its author a coveted Southern Playwrights Competition Award, as well as a Kentucky Arts Council Award.
The edge-of-your-seat mystery was first produced at Pioneer Playhouse in 2008, and is back this year by popular demand.
Each year Pioneer Playhouse offers one “Kentucky Voices” original play that celebrates some aspect of Kentucky history, heritage and culture. This is their tenth year of “Kentucky Voices” and so the theatre is celebrating with 2 originals rather than the usual 1.
