LUDLOW, Ky. (AP) – The mother and grandparents of a disabled teenager who died from an infection caused by open bedsores have pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges.
The Kentucky Enquirer reports (http://cin.ci/2qrUXK3) 18-year-old Joseph Bishop had been left to “rot” in his bed for months before he was finally taken to Cincinnati Children’s Medical Center where he died Feb. 11.
His mother, 40-year-old Jamie Bishop, and her parents, 67-year-old Raymond Martin and 65-year-old Sharon Martin, are facing five to 10 years in prison. They will be sentenced July 23.
Joseph Bishop had Duchenne muscular dystrophy and used a wheelchair. Kenton County Commonwealth’s Attorney Rob Sanders says the teen had bedsores all over his body, including a bedsore about the size of a dinner plate on his back.
He says Joseph’s death was the result of neglect and selfishness.
