LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – 2017 will mark the 39th year for the annual “Picnic with the Pops” event, and the theme is going to take you back to the 1980’s.
The summer celebration will feature two nights of music performed by the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra. Friday, August 18th, will feature the booming and award winning soundtrack of Steven Spielberg’s “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” followed by the pop-music of the legendary Michael Jackson on Saturday, August 19th.
Lexington Philharmonic conductor Scott Terrell promises that Picnic with the Pops will please crowds of all ages. “I can say with some assurance that i have conducted “Raiders” live with an orchestra, [and] it is a different experience to hear the sonic nature and power that an orchestra provides to this epic Steven Spielberg.”
Mayor Jim Gray was also on hand earlier on Tuesday for the line-up announcement. He says he tries to attend the summer event every year, and believes Picnic with the Pops is a great event that ‘fits” Lexington.
“I see smiles on the faces of a lot of you,” said Mayor Gray. “It really adds so much to what Lexington is all about, and this event adds so much to our summer in every dimension and respect.”
