SADIEVILLE, Ky. (WTVQ) – A family of three are safe, but without a home after a house fire in Scott County early Thursday morning.
The Scott County Fire Department says the flames broke out around 3:00 a.m. on Frogtown Road.
The father of the family told the fire department he lit the fire place at around 9:00 p.m. Wednesday, and thought it was completely out before they went to bed. Hours later, however, the man says he started smelling smoke.
Firefighters say the man attempted to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher but was unsuccessful. By the time they arrives, crews say the fire had already spread into chimney and walls of the cabin and it could not be saved.
Firefighters say battling the fire was made more difficult by the location of the home, which was down a winding, narrow road. They were able to draw water from a nearby pond, but freezing temperatures also complicated that effort.
The family, who were renting the home, will stay with relatives.
Firefighters are remaining on the scene Thursday, looking out for hot spots.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
