Toma Washington turned himself in Wednesday morning after detectives called him a danger to the community.

Police found Jaleesa Robinson, 24, shot in the chest at the Circle K on Schenkel Lane Tuesday evening.  Police say she drove to the gas station to call 9-1-1 after having been shot by Washington along Ridgeview Drive. She was airlifted to UK Hospital where she later died.

“She was an amazing girl,” said Jennifer Rutherford who calls Robinson a childhood friend. “She was nice and always looking out for other people and this is just a shock to hear that she was murdered.”

Investigators are still looking into why Robinson was shot but Washington is charged with her murder.

Police say officers are familiar with Washington and that he has a very violent criminal history.

Court records in Franklin County show a history of domestic violence and assault. He was charged with murder in 1997 but records show it was later amended down to manslaughter.

ABC 36 learned Robinson’s mom works at the Dollar Tree in Frankfort. The store is now collecting money to help her family. Workers say anything helps and that donations can be dropped off at the store: 363 Versailles Road.
