LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Many Kentuckians spend time in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and other parts of east Tennessee, and some Lexington businesses say they just have to do something.

“Everybody seems pretty devastated by it,” says Helue Shalash, who works at the Bak 4 More Studio.  “They lost the whole town.”

Shalash and her co-workers aren’t taking the news sitting down.  They’re collecting supplies to send to Tennessee and help those who have lost so much.

“It’s all about helping the fellow man.  If somebody’s hurting, we’re hurting.”

The hair salon is looking for donations of bottled water, toiletries, non-perishable food items, diapers, wipes, plastic ware, paper products, blankets, and coats, to help those displaced by the fires.

“Anything and everything,” says Shalash.  “There’s no such thing as too small of a donation or too large of a donation.”

Bak 4 More Studio donations can be dropped off at 3090 Helmsdale Place, Ste. 210.

Earth Dog Spa & Apawthecary feels the same way about the four-legged victims of the fires.

“We just really want to be able to help them rebuild,” says Janel Keen, who works at the pet supply and grooming store. “It’s a very, very sad thing and it breaks our hearts.  Being there, seeing those places that are no longer there.  It’s heartbreaking.”

Earth Dog Spa is focusing on helping the animals, and the local shelter, which also had to evacuate.

“We have people here that love animals, that can love that area, who will actually be able to come and bring us food, and flea treatment and medicine, that we can get down to them and help them in any way.”

Earth Dog Spa & Apawthecary is taking donations of Purina Dog Chow and Cat Chow, collars and leashes, large Kuranda dog beds, cat and dog beds, food and water bowls, blankets and towels, paper towels, wire crate/kennels and plastic travel crates, Advantage dog and cat flea treatment, liquid laundry detergent, Dawn dish soap, hand sanitizer, bottled water, and soda for volunteers. Donations can be dropped off at Earth Dog Spa & Apawthecary (743 Allendale Drive,) Pet Wants Lex (321 S. Ashland Avenue,) Petsmart in Hamburg, or Two Men and a Truck (789 Westland Drive.)  No monetary donations will be accepted, but donations can be made to the Sevier County Humane Society website.

Additional businesses in the region are also collecting donations to be taken to Gatlinburg and the surrounding affected areas.
