LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- The owner of a popular Lexington holiday light display says he caught some young people tearing his decorations down on camera, but it’s not stealing his holiday cheer.
Matt Smith says he’s been decorating his Mt. McKinley Way home for nine years. During the past four, he’s started taking donations of imperishable goods and giving them to God’s Pantry Food Bank.
You might imagine his disappointment upon realizing someone had torn down some of his decorations this month shortly after he began assembling them.
“I’m trying to do something good for Lexington, giving back,” says Smith. “I would be able to fix it in just a few moments but it was more heartbreaking than anything to see that it would be done like that.”
He says putting the lights back up isn’t costing him anything but he was able to catch what he calls “young Grinches” on his security camera. The video shows what appears to be two young people pushing over a candy cane and archway before yanking down strings of green lights.
Smith says the police are involved but it’s not going to keep him from moving forward and finishing his decorating before the big debut, Thanksgiving Day.
