FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) – Western Kentucky University has sued the state’s beleaguered retirement system over being forced to continue paying benefits for about 160 workers who no longer officially work for the school.

School officials outsourced some jobs to a private company in August. Those employees are doing their same jobs, they just work for a private company now instead of a public university.

Despite that, an attorney for Western, Thomas Kerrick, says state officials are requiring the university to continue to pay into the retirement system for those workers. The workers have to keep contributing as well. University officials sued.

A spokesman for the retirement system says he has not seen the lawsuit and declined to comment. Kentucky’s retirement system is among the worst funded public pension programs in the country.
