Off-the-clock nurse avoids Mountain Parkway crash, stops to help victims

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- A nurse who narrowly avoided a deadly crash on the Mountain Parkway Wednesday says she knew what she had to do when she saw so many people hurt.

“Just all of a sudden everything turned totally, totally gray,” says Patricia Francis. She says the smoke from nearby wildfires made driving conditions dangerous.

State police say 11 passenger vehicles and three commercial vehicles were involved in the crash around nine Wednesday morning.

One person died, according to troopers.

“Been in the medical field for thirty years and it’s really affecting me,” says Francis, a nurse at UK.

She says when she pulled off the roadway, she started assisting first responders with IVs, and dressings for the victims. Francis says her brother-in-law and his parents were involved in the crash and she was had to treat them before they were airlifted from the scene.

Crash reconstruction crews expected for the parkway to be reopened by Wednesday afternoon.
