Woman Taken Into Custody After 8 Hour Standoff in Richmond

RICHMOND, Ky. (WTVQ) – People in Richmond were evacuated from their homes on Sunday for more than eight hours as police tried to get a suspect into custody.

Officers say they were called to the 200 block of Valley Street at around 11:30 a.m. on a report that shots had been fired.

Police say that was the beginning of what would be an 8 hour standoff with a woman inside the home.

Officers say they eventually used tear gas and sent a robot into the home to monitor the woman, but that she fired at and damaged the robot.

Police say the woman also shot multiple times at the front door and the adjoining wall.

According to investigators, the woman told responders that she would shoot the officers if they came into the home.

Police say they were able to eventually negotiate 46-year-old Sherry Rogers out of her home without anyone being injured.
