FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) – Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin says pay raises will be awarded to more than half of the workforce in the state Transportation Cabinet.
Transportation officials said Monday that some employees could receive salary increases of up to $3.20 per hour by January. The raises will cover many of the cabinet’s lowest-paid jobs.
Bevin made the announcement at a transportation salvage yard in Frankfort.
Bevin says the goal is to reduce high employee turnover rates.
The Republican governor, who worked as a highway department employee years ago, says the workers in line for pay raises do hard, thankless jobs.
Highway equipment operator Mike Mitchell says the pay raise has been a long time coming. He says the boost will help pay for more sports equipment for his young son.
