LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A pair of neurology residents at the University of Kentucky have raised thousands of dollars on a GoFundMe campaign created to benefit victims of an earthquake in Ecuador earlier this year.
Dr. Mauricio Villamar and his wife, Dr. Ana Cristina Albuja (above, last two on the right,) are both from Quito, Ecuador, and felt a personal drive to help the victims of the 7.8 magnitude quake, which killed hundreds and injured thousands.
Their GoFundMe page raised over $64,000 dollars, benefiting victims through the Red Cross and the ArchDiocese of Quito.
Villamar and Albuja are no strangers to humanitarian aid, participating in mission work through Hands Across the World, and assisting plastic surgeons with reconstructive surgeries in Ecuador.
Villamar and Albuja were also recently named Residents of the Month at UK.
