PARIS, Ky. (WTVQ)- Folks living on and around Brent Street say they had no choice but to leave their homes overnight as police exchanged gunfire with a man they say shot an officer.

Kentucky State Troopers say that officer, who isn’t being identified will be okay because his bulletproof vest did its job. They say the standoff started around 9:30 Tuesday night after the officer was shot while investigating a burglary.

For hours, troopers say they tried to negotiate with Charles Stidham inside his home but when he started shooting at them, they say they fired back. The standoff ended when they say Stidham was found dead inside. Troopers say no one else was in the house.

Terry Leonard lives directly next Stidham and recalls being asked to leave his home late Tuesday night. Leonard says he stayed with his daughter.

Once the sun came up on Brent Street, evidence of the standoff was clear. Stidham’s home was covered in bullet holes with windows being shot out along with street lights.

Troopers say they’re still investigating the officer involved shooting.
