On Friday, the Madison County court held another status hearing ahead of the trial, set to begin in July of 2017.

Raleigh Sizemore appeared before the judge first.  He is accused of firing the gun that killed Officer Ellis.  He is facing a murder charge.  Attorneys for Sizemore say they are still awaiting lab results in the case, and have also asked for a change a venue.  The judge has not made a decision on that just yet. Prosecutors say they want the trial to as close to Madison County as possible.

Sizemore’s co- defendant, Gregory Ratliff, also appeared in court, charged with being an accomplice to the murder of a police officer.  His attorney requested the judge to remove that charge, because he says Ratliff did not fire the gun that ultimately took Ellis’ life.  The judge denied that motion. Ratliff’s attorneys also want a separate trial and a different venue.

Both defendants are due back in court December 9th
