LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – A GOP state House candidate’s Facebook posts has prompted a public apology from the leader of the Kentucky Republican Party.
WDRB reports (http://bit.ly/2d9ZSez ) Republican Dan Johnson is a candidate for the 49th district, which includes much of Bullitt County. Johnson’s Facebook page has included a photo of a chimpanzee with the caption “Obama’s baby picture” and a post calling Islam a “criminal syndicate.”
Johnson told WDRB the posts were satire. He has since deleted many of them.
Republican Party of Kentucky chairman Mac Brown has apologized for Johnson’s posts, saying they do not represent “the views of the Republican Party of Kentucky or the many fine candidates representing us on the ballot.”
Democratic Party chairwoman Sannie Overly has called for Johnson to drop out of the race. “Racism does not deserve a slap on the wrist or a second chance,” said Rep. Overly. “The Kentucky Republican Party Chairman has called these comments outrageous and that they ‘represent the rankest sort of prejudice present in our society’, and I agree. The only decent option would be for this candidate to withdraw from seeking a role as a lawmaker and representative of the people of Kentucky.”
