LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department says its needle exchange program is making strides in fighting the spread of Hepatitis C and HIV. It opened one year ago.

In a Facebook post it says, “We saw 61 people on Friday, Sept. 2! We received 1,080 used needles and gave out 1,267 clean needles. In total, we have received 21,385 used needles and given out 23,002 clean needles since starting Sept. 4, 2015! We’ve also had five people use our on-site referral to rehabilitation services!”

In addition to free needles and free disposal of dirty needles, the health department says it also offers testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
