LONDON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Laurel Co. Sheriff says a London man has been arrested after he barricaded himself in a home following an argument with his ex-wife.
Deputies say they received a 911 call on Sunday, saying that 56-year-old Willard Hampton had been in a fight with his ex-wife, and had fired a handgun at her. When deputies arrived at the scene, they say the found the ex-wife at a neighbors house, who told them that Hampton had drank a 12-pack of beer and a fifth of whiskey, and that he had set her belongings outside the house and told her to never come back. Deputies say the woman told them that after a verbal argument, Hampton had pulled a Smith & Wesson .38 and fired a shot at her as she was leaving.
According to deputies, Hampton then barricaded himself inside, locking the doors and putting drywall screws in them. Hampton reportedly wouldn’t answer the phone when deptuies tried to call him.
Deputies say they then called in the Sheriff’s Office Special Response Unit (SRU,) who were also unsuccessful in making contact with Hampton. Hampton also refused to come out of the home after the SRU fire in a smoke canister. After firing in a second smoke canister, however, Hampton came out, and was arrested after a brief struggle with deputies.
Hampton was charged with wanton endangerment, assault, domestic violent, and criminal mischief, among other charges.
He was taken to the Laurel Co. Detention Center.
