ESTILL CO., Ky. (WTVQ) – The Concerned Citizens of Estill County (CCEC,) have announced a rally at Estill County High School on Saturday, July 16, to raise awareness of illegal radioactive waste dumping in their landfill.
The rally will begin at 5:00 p.m. and go to 8:00 p.m. that evening at the Estill County High School – Route 89 north of Irvine. There will be presentations by Estill County Judge Executive Wallace Taylor, Kentucky Resources Council Executive Director Tom FitzGerald and others. There will be music intermixed with presentations and free childcare will be provided.
Over a period of several months, July – November of 2015, approximately 2000 tons of radioactive fracking waste was illegally dumped in the Estill County Municipal Landfill.
Kentucky does not have any landfills designated to accept radioactive waste.
Michael “Bucky” Wilson, CCEC’s Board Chair said, “We are deeply concerned not only about the current risks, but about the potential impact in the future –especially on the next generations.”
